This elegant Raku urn can hold an average adults ashes completely and respectfully.

How is Raku created?

Raku firing is an age-old ceramics method from Japan that produces a distinct and artistic finish on pottery.

The pieces are first biscuit-fired and then undergo a second firing in a Raku kiln at about 800 ºC. While still extremely hot, horsehair is placed on the body of the piece, creating unique black, winding lines as the carbon from the hair burns into the clay. After cooling, Renaissance wax is applied and polished to give the surface a glossy finish. The pieces are unglazed and suitable for containing loved ones’ ashes.  Not suitable to contain liquid.

Personalisation option: We are able to utilise a provided horsehair sample to create a truly personalised item. If this is of interest, please provide details in the special instructions section below.

Alan Booth collection inspiration

Alan Booth draws his inspiration from the inherent beauty of natural forms, which is evident throughout his body of work. His subjects and landscapes are sourced globally, reflecting a broad artistic perspective.

For Afterstone, Alan has created urns in four distinct sizes, utilising a specialised Raku clay engineered to withstand thermal shock. Each form is carefully turned and burnished, resulting in a refined, polished surface upon completion.

Alan trained in Staffordshire under Derek Emms, focusing on ‘hand-thrown’ and industrial ceramics. A degree in multidisciplinary design – utilising various discrete media, including illustration and photography, and ultimately specialising in ceramics.

Alan’s studio is located in Shaftesbury, North Dorset…close to the foot of ‘Gold Hill’ (of Hovis advert fame). Raku firings take place in his garden studio, which looks out over the Cranborne Chase and Melbury Beacon. A glorious rural environment for inspiration and creativity.
