Our sustainability: people, planet, and ethical memorials

At Afterstone, we believe a final tribute should honour both a loved one and the world they left behind. As an eco-friendly memorial provider based just outside Exeter, Devon, we are committed to an ethical, transparent approach to memorialisation that proves high-quality design and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand.

Consciously crafted British memorials

We believe in the power of the local. By collaborating with British artisans and consultants, we minimise our carbon footprint. Our pottery is crafted in Devon and Dorset, while our wood memorial products are sourced from Cornwall and Yorkshire.

Every piece in the Afterstone collection is created in our home-based studio. From expert engraving to final assembly, everything is handled in our Topsham office, located less than 2.8 miles from our home. This localised workflow significantly reduces the transport emissions associated with traditional mass-market keepsakes.

Sustainable innovation: cold-cast vs. kiln-fired

A cornerstone of our commitment is our signature cold-cast ash-into stone memorial process. Unlike solidified-ash pebble manufacturing, which relies on high-heat, carbon-intensive kilns (often exceeding 1,000°C), our cold-casting method occurs at room temperature. This drastically lowers energy consumption and eliminates the release of harmful industrial emissions, offering an affordable, low-carbon alternative to fully solidified ash stones.

Smarter, lower-impact logistics

Ashes are a restricted transport item. Full solidification of human or pet ashes require expensive transportation via specialised cremated remains couriers. Afterstone offers a more sustainable path. Because our memorial pieces require only a small, measured amount of ashes (up to 50g), they can be shipped safely via standard, reliable services like Royal Mail. This effectively shares the transport carbon impact across a wider network, removing the need for heavy, individual logistics.

Our circular commitment to zero-waste

We strive to minimise our environmental footprint at every stage of business:

  • 100% plastic-free packaging:
We utilise recyclable brown boxes, durable kraft tape, and biodegradable, GM-free starch nuggets to protect your keepsakes.

  • Circular economy:
We actively reuse incoming supplier packaging to ship orders to our funeral director partners. We even repurpose paper stock with minor print errors into our informative customer-facing guides.

  • Energy-efficient operations:
Our Topsham office is managed with a focus on essential usage-limiting electricity and using moisture-control technology to reduce the need for constant heating.

Our commitment to nature

Beyond our office and studio, we are dedicated to restoring the natural world. We are proud to donate 5% of all referral sales to our chosen charities, which include the Woodland Trust, directly supporting reforestation and the preservation of natural habitats across the UK.

As a proud member of the SAIF, Made in Britain community and the Devon Chamber of Commerce, we are setting a new standard for ash keepsake and memorial companies. We invite you to choose a company that honours your loved one beautifully, affordably, and in harmony with our planet.
