Afterstone has been accepted as an Associate Member of SAIF — the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors. For a small Devon business still in its first year, this means a great deal.
What is SAIF?
SAIF is one of the UK's leading funeral industry associations, representing independent funeral directors who are committed to the highest standards of care, dignity and professionalism. Associate Membership is open to businesses that work alongside the funeral profession and share those same values. We applied because we wanted to be held to account — not just by ourselves, but by the industry and families we serve.
Why being part of SAIF matters to families
When you send us your loved one's ashes, you are placing an enormous amount of trust in us. We don't take that lightly. Knowing that Afterstone is accountable to an independent professional body — that we have committed to its standards and values and abide by its code of practice, we hope gives you one more reason to feel confident in that decision.

- SAIF have stringent conditions for membership, which includes demonstrating a sound trading history and suitable premises.
- Members are inspected against the Code of Practice SAIF Care bereavement support and a Consumer Protection Scheme
What it means in practice
Every set of ashes entrusted to Afterstone is individually tracked from the moment they arrive with us to the moment your finished piece is safely returned to you. Each order is assigned a unique Ash Memorial ID number. Every stage of the process — receipt, preparation, making, quality check, packaging and dispatch — is documented and signed off.
We follow the principles of the FBCA Code of Practice for the management and handling of cremated remains. We work with British materials. Every piece is handmade here in Devon.
SAIF Associate Membership sits alongside our Made in Britain certification and Devon Chamber of Commerce membership as part of our commitment to doing this properly — for every family, every time.
