Pet memorial stones - your questions answered

If you are thinking about a memorial stone for a pet, the questions below will help you decide what's right for you.

There is a good reason the plaited leather dog collar endures. No embellishment. No novelty. Just good-quality material, made well, carrying a quiet dignity. The best tributes to an animal companion work in exactly the same way. They don't shout. They simply remain.

What is a pet memorial stone from Afterstone?

It is a naturally rounded river pebble, engraved with your chosen words. Each stone is selected by hand for its shape and character and then engraved in our studio in Devon using a CO2 laser. The result is a crisp serif inscription — precise, clean, and cut directly into the natural surface of the stone. No paint. No gilding. No resin fill. Letting the natural beauty of the stone and the words shine.

No two stones are identical. The natural variation in colour, texture and form is part of what makes each one its own.

What should I write on my pet's memorial stone?

Less is more. A name. Perhaps a date. A single line that mattered.

The stones that carry the most weight tend to be the simplest. Bella. Beloved whippet. Run free. Or simply a name and the years. The engraving does the rest.

If you're looking for ideas, our pet epitaph suggestions guide offers a range of options — none of them sentimental, all of them considered.

What size of memorial pebble should I choose?

We offer three sizes of natural river stone pebble which includes 1 line of engraving as standard. Small (from £25), medium (from £32) and large (from £45) — as well as an engraved wooden pebble (from £18) for indoor display. Additional lines of engraving are available, so you can ensure it properly reflects your pet.

The stones are chosen deliberately for their presence and size. Even the smallest  at 10-12cm length sits comfortably in a cupped hand and is large enough to read at a glance. All three sizes are selected to hold their own — to be seen, not searched for.

Will the pebble last outdoors?

Yes. Natural river stones are weather-resistant and require no maintenance. The laser engraving is permanent. Your stone will exist for years to come and fit comfortably into its environment.

Can I add an image or a paw print?

We offer a small number of simple, discreet icons — a paw print, a heart, and a small selection of others — that sit quietly alongside the engraved text without overpowering it. They are chosen to complement the understated aesthetic of the stone rather than decorate it. If this is something you'd like to include in your design, please let us know.

To request an icon, add your preference in the special instructions field at checkout, or email us directly at vmarsh@afterstone.co.uk and we'll confirm what's possible before we engrave.

What we don't offer is etched pet portraits, photographs, or illustrated designs.

Can I have one made for any pet animal?

Yes, absolutely. Dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, parrots, sheep, goats, alpacas, snakes — we have engraved stones for all of them. The animal doesn't change the approach. A loyal companion deserves a dignified tribute, regardless of size or species.

Is an engraved natural pebble memorial stone the same as an Afterstone ash-into-stone memorial piece?

No, and it's worth being clear on this. They are entirely different products. An engraved memorial stone is a natural river pebble with your chosen words cut into it. It contains no pet ashes. It marks a place or sits in a meaningful spot.

An ash-into-stone memorial piece — an Afterstone pebble, heart or teddy bear — is made with a small portion (up to 50 grams) of your pet's cremated ashes incorporated into the stone material itself.

Both are handmade in Devon. Both are made with the same care. But they serve different purposes, and it matters to understand which one is right for you.

Can I order both an engraved memorial stone and an Afterstone ash-into-stone keepsake pebble or piece for my pet?

Absolutely, many people do. A memorial stone at a scattering spot of the ashes in the garden or favourite place and an Afterstone ash-into-stone memorial piece – like the solo pebble – are kept in the home or in your pocket. One marks the resting place. One acts as a remembrance keepsake.

How long does it take to engrave a pet memorial stone?

Engraved natural river pebble memorial stones are typically dispatched within 5 to 10 working days. If you need an engraved stone for a particular date, contact us and we will do what we can.

How long does it take to make an Afterstone ash-into-stone memorial pebble or keepsake piece for my pet?

Afterstone ash-into-stone pebbles and pieces have longer lead times due to the amount of time required to create and hand-finish them and engrave them where selected. We ask you to allow 4-6 weeks from us receiving the ashes back from you, but we endeavour to get your pieces back to you as quickly as we can.
